چکیده

introduction: the most common manifestation of disturbed neurological function following stroke is motor weakness. muscle weakness has been implicated as a factor underlying deficits in gait performance in subjects who have suffered strokes . the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between involved lower extremity isometric muscle strength and two functional tasks: gait ability and balance and motor skills in chronic stage of hemiparesis following stroke. materials and methods: this analytical cross sectional study was performed in kahrizak charity foundation in 2004. 34 hemiparetic patients who had suffered strokes were chosen through a simple non-probability sampling. all patients were screened to ensure that their duration since the onset of the stroke was at least 12 months. the isometric strength of seven muscle groups was measured with a hand-held dynamometer. two functional activities, gait ability and balance and motor skills were measured by using fac and timed get up and go tests, respectively. spearman ’ s correlations and linear regression were used to investigate the relationship and to estimate the results. results : all muscle groups strength, except for hip extensors (r=0.16), were correlated significantly with the timed tet up and go scores (r=0.37 - 0.45). none of these muscle groups strength, except for hip abductors (r=0.34), were correlated with functional ambulation category test scores (r=-0.021- 0.2). conclusion: the results showed that all muscles’ strength, except for hip extensors, are valid estimators of balance and motor skills, and strength of hip abductors are valid estimators of gait ability. also, this study is in support of using the involved lower extremity muscle strength measurements for evaluation of balance and motor skills and treatment of people in the chronic stage of rehabilitation following a stroke.

Functional changes in motoneurones of hemiparetic patients.

Forty-six patients have been studied after upper motor neurone lesions of cerebrovascular origin. The numbers of functioning motor units in extensor digitorum brevis muscles were reduced to approximately half between the second and sixth months after a hemiplegic episode. The surviving motor units tended to have slow twitches and appeared to increase their sizes after the lesions had been prese...

Curved walking in hemiparetic patients.

OBJECTIVE Curved walking requires complex adaptations, including shift of body weight to counteract the ensuing centrifugal force, and the production of strides of different length between legs. We hypothesized that gait capacities would be more stressed in hemiparetic patients than in healthy subjects when walking along curved, compared with straight, trajectories. METHODS Twenty chronic, st...

Functional test for the hemiparetic upper extremity.

A test, called the Functional Test, that evaluates the integrated function of the total upper extremity of an adult hemiparetic patient has been developed. It was used with 82 patients admitted to Rancho Los Amigos Hospital for stroke rehabilitation, together with a battery of six objective test measures. Sequential testing by two examiners demonstrated that the test had interrater reliability....

Evidence of cortical reorganization in hemiparetic patients.

We studied the mechanisms underlying the recovery of motor function of the hand using a bidimensional xenon-133 inhalation technique to measure regional cerebral blood flow at rest and during the performance of a motor task (test condition). The regional cerebral blood flow patterns under rest and test conditions were compared in normal control and in stroke patients with either a cortico-subco...

Activation of selected trunk muscles during symmetric functional activities in poststroke hemiparetic and hemiplegic patients.

OBJECTIVE To compare the EMG activity between the recti abdominii muscles and between the lumbar erector spinae muscles in hemiparetic and hemiplegic patients during functional symmetric trunk movements and to compare patients' EMG activity profiles with those of healthy controls. METHODS EMG activity from the selected muscles was recorded during three symmetric and time controlled trunk exer...
